DESIGN. TECHNOLOGY. LIFESTYLE.
We create brands, products, experiences and sometimes we wrap them all together to create new companies.
ALL MISSIONS POSSIBLE

Astro lives in the heart of San Francisco's SoMa district and on the fringe of Silicon Valley. We embrace a design approach that blends the lifestyle and culture of California as well as the interconnectivity of technology and turn brands and products into relevant, people-focused results.

For the past 25 years, we have helped clients and partners transform markets, collaborated with founders to co-create new companies, as well as launched, funded, and fueled a few of our own.

We turn design thinking into design empowerment and establish a creative habitat for our employees and clients to have the tools to be successful.

“We constantly explore the world, trying to find new and unexpected ways to improve the human experience.”

— Andrew Casden, Insights Director

EMERGING TECH & EXPERIENCES

WAYS TO ENGAGE
CONSULTING

Based upon an agreed scope of work, Astro will work strategically toward an inspiring solution. Every project is unique, but our process will be grounded in our Astro 5D Process to create the best results. Check out our work section for examples of what we've consistently delivered for our global clientele.

CO-CREATION

Astro loves co-creating with entrepreneurs across a wide spectrum of businesses. We've lived the company creation dream too, so we understand the drive to build something from scratch. We often work in alternative compensation paths to enable new ventures. Some of our top co-creations are: SOL Republic, Boxee TV, Nebula, Ooma, SenseLabs, and Zuli.

ORIGINATION

We love deploying our own big ideas. We've used our skills to define, design, and develop companies including Astro Gaming (sold to Skullcandy) and Minus-8 watches.

WE LOVE OUR CLIENTS
Here are just a few of them:
Our glorious, glorious team.
Tom Galbraith
Studio Manager

Tom gets stuff done, isn’t afraid to wear a gorilla suit and heavily contributes to the Astro Blog, marketing materials, and any other content that may come across his desk. He has stepped foot in every state in this great nation of ours, even the ones he didn’t want to visit. Being a musician since birth, Tom turns his Astro duties into rock songs….like “Moving Chairs” or “Ordering Pop Tarts from Costco.” And although the critics love him, he’s been widely ignored by most music listeners.

Brett Lovelady
Founder & CEO

Brett is a designer, communicator and angst-ridden creative capitalist. After receiving his BFA in Design at BYU, he escaped to Silicon Valley to design the future. After his successful run as Vice President of Design at Lunar and Frog respectively, he sought absolute power (aka responsibility) and unbridled creative license. This led him to the founding of Astro Studios in 1994, and it’s been a giant fun-filled waterslide of bringing innovative products to market, turning venturous sparks into fireballs, and becoming a global design voice. Brett’s favorite pastime is family time with a dash of sports and music to take the edge off. And if he gets the chance, a lap in his classic Mustang ragtop recharges him to pursue the next big thing.

Carolyn Galbraith
Finance Director

Carolyn’s first job was peddling candy and nuts for the House Of Almonds in San Rafael, and her life has been pretty much uphill since then. After receiving her BA in Theater from UC Santa Cruz, she has quarterbacked the financial role for many diverse companies for over 20 years. Since her arrival at Astro Carolyn has continued in her role of financial steward, as well as quite literally put the human back in Human Resources. Although she still enjoys a good nut medley, she kicks out the cashews…too salty.

Brian Wood
Lead Designer

Brian Wood emerged from the sticks of North America unkempt and bedraggled. Local Texas lore has it that Brian earned his BFA from Texas State University–San Marcos, and worked his way through various design and branding studios across Austin, Europe, and San Francisco. Then Brian’s life took a turn. After two years trekking with his wife along the entire North American Coast, Brian realized he needed a gig with a sturdy, multi-disciplinary, independent studio. Brian’s vision quest has brought the backwoods back to 348 6th Street.

Sami Lovelady
Designer

Sami is a California born creative with a BFA in Photography and Graphic design, emphasis in Digital Marketing and Art History. She has applied her talents to create solutions for companies and their identities for over 5 years. With an additional background in Health and Wellness, her passion to impact others in a positive way carries through beyond just the digital and creative industry.

Sean Missal
Lead Designer

Sean comes to us from Western Washington University where he earned his Bachelor Degree in Industrial Design. Born in the 90s, Sean is truly a child of the tech age. Sean interned at Astro before we snatched him up full-time and we’re quite proud of how the young man has turned out. Although relatively new to the commercial design game, Sean is laying down heavy design and knowledge for some of our top clients. Before designing, Sean was a pro-gamer with lighting thumbs and smoldering retinas. We turned that couch loving energy into a take no prisoners design machine. As long as we translate the design briefs into first person shooter scenarios, Sean excels every time.

Lauren Fanning
Account Manager

Lauren Fanning and Neil Armstrong were both born in, Wapakoneta, Ohio. So naturally after earning her degree from Miami University in Oxford OH., a space-heavy design studio was written in the stars. If Lauren isn’t knee deep in projects at work, you can find her running the steep inclines of Nob Hill, cooking something and or something, reading the latest sci fi book, or perpetually redesigning the interior of her apartment.

Robin Marich
Lead Designer

Robin Marich has a blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, so we’ve allotted ample room at Robin’s workstation for roundhouse kicks and knee strikes. If you can avoid getting your ass kicked you’ll find the softer side of Robin; an accomplished graphic designer who earned her degree at The Academy of Art, SF and has worked in both SF and NY. Here at Astro Robin excels in the collaborations between our multiple design disciplines, and has an enormous amount of love for dumplings.

Kristy Green
Business Director

Kristy hails from the University of Illinois where she studied Nutrition, but a few rounds at the hospital quickly squashed the Florence Nightingale right out of her. Knowing she needed to be part of a creative scene, she switched gears into Advertising and cut her teeth at agencies in Chicago, NYC and San Francisco. Most recently, she lent her knowledge and calm to Goodby Silverstein & Partners before beaming on to the Astro Mothership where she currently resides. In her spare time, Kristy likes to practice yoga and teach her Chihuahua Rufus to play guitar. She says he’s doing well, although he needs to learn a few more songs...Magaritaville just isn’t cutting it.

Joy Young
Associate Creative Director

Joy was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and earned her Bachelor of Design from the College of Creative Arts in Wellington, New Zealand. Joy then started her career as a globetrotting industrial designer, professionally designing in Taipei, Sydney, Dublin, and Portland before setting down at ASTRO where she still calls pickles “gherkins”. Joy’s love of hands-on modeling compliments her passion for turning complex ideas into simple organic stories. When Joy isn’t at Astro, you can find her smiling face watching sci-fi movies and eating meat pies.

Alex Komerdelj
Project Manager
Alex was probably born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and went to school at ASU where he received his BSD in Industrial Design. After manning the lost and found at Fountain Bowl he knew he had to set his sights higher, and Astro was on his trajectory. Everyday Alex commutes to work by ferry, and he often catches Halibut and Rockfish that we fry here for lunch! When active and not at work you can find him kayaking, or backpacking in Yosemite. When lazy, you can find him playing Magic: The Gathering, or Dungeons and Dragons. His D&D character’s name is Beoduh.
Neha Hattangdi
Lead Designer

Originally from Mumbai, Neha earned her master’s degree in graphic design from the Academy of Art University. Neha spent the beginning of her career at ad agencies and fashion magazines, building brands and making them authentic. Now with years of experience, Neha’s clarity and taste shines through all her design solutions, and our clients are digging it! When Neha isn’t busy at Astro, you can find her designing type faces and running her own independent type foundry. Oh yeah, and drinking hella tea!

Andrew Casden
Insight & Strategy Director

Andrew hails from a far-away land known as Connecticut, and brings a bit of the brash New Englander with him wherever he roams. Since moving to San Francisco, Andrew has carved out a niche at the crossroads of research, design and storytelling, having spent the better part of his career as an ethnographer, strategist, and documentary producer. In doing so he hopes to be an advocate for the user, and inspire designers and marketers to better create meaningful experiences for them. When he’s not making the world a better place you can probably find him rocking out at a music festival, or in some far-flung place around the world eating questionable street food.

Norio Fujikawa
Executive Ceative Director

After working his way through design school as a fish monger, Norio put down his fileting knife and studied at the Institute of Design in Chicago. Directing numerous successful projects, Norio has earned his scars and stripes as a big picture thinker and solver. He’s a perpetual artist who just can’t turn it off. Norio’s meeting notes have a tendency to end up on gallery walls and store shelves alike. Some say Norio is an art-robot from the future; others say he’s just Norio.

Jashmine Ali
Studio Administrator

Born and raised in Suva City, Fiji, Jashmine moved to the US when she was 19. She used to loiter with her friends at the local Jack in the Box, until the manager saw promise in our young Jashmine, and hired her for her first job: to keep her friends from loitering at Jack in the Box. If you can’t find Jashmine here at Astro, she is most likely chilling with her kids, cooking, baking, or salsa dancing.

Jaee Kwon
Designer

Jaee Kwon, a former freelance designer for Astro, has rejoined the team in full-force! Born in Daejeon, South Korea, Jaee traveled between South Korea and the US, until ultimately landing in Arizona. She earned her BS in Industrial Design at ASU, and although cheering for the Sun Devils is super fun, Arizona is freaking hot. Jaee traveled Northwest to cool down. In fact, she likes to cool way down. In the winter you will find her in Tahoe, or skiing somewhere on the slopes, where she feels most at home.

Celia Elmasu
Senior Designer

Don’t let her motto of bling, glitter and cats fool you. Although Celia may be a yellow belt in Thai Kick Boxing, she is a ruthless black belt in 3D design. Her love of bright colors and bold/flamboyant design have led her to start a 3D printed jewelry brand. The brand has garnered critical acclaim, and pieces have been worn by FKA Twigs and Demi Lovato! Wait what? You heard right.

Scott Pancioli
Designer

Scott was born in Commerce Township in Michigan where he earned his BFA in industrial design from CCS in Michigan. His love of illustration was introduced to him early on by the soothing instructional painting videos of Bob Ross. Bob’s mantra, “talent is just pursued interest” must have seeped in, because Scott continued to explore his passion for drawing and furniture making. Along with the nailing a job in SF, Scott also came for the challenge of skating the steep hills, and to lurk in the back of coffee shops to draw people when they aren’t looking.

Eric Bergman
Creative Director

Eric Bergman rode tourists through North Beach on a pedicab while earning his Industrial Design degree from CCA. To continue his education, he focused the extra energy into co-founding several companies, while kickstarting his career in the corporate world. After blazing his own trail for 15 years, Eric came in from the cold vacuum of the independent design space. He savors the fresh and creative atmosphere aboard the Astro Mothership, and its diverse, talented crew. Dedicated to creating products that push the envelope of innovation, he fits right in. If you can’t find Eric in the studio, he’s probably surfing or working on his house, or more like it, teaching his daughter to hold a nail gun and paddle out at big OB, but not at the same time.

Francois Dransart
Lead Designer

While sitting beneath a tree between lectures at France’s Institut Supérieur de Design, Francois was struck on his head by an apple. While rubbing his head, he knew fighting gravity was his true calling and that Astro would be a perfect fit for him, his master’s degree, and his snowboard. If you can pry Francois away from his designing tools you’ll find him hiking, biking or shredding large hills in San Francisco or the nearby Sierras.

Gigi Aldrich
Designer

Gigi was born in LA. and comes to us via the Academy of Art University, where she earned her BFA in Graphic Design. After various jobs in SF, Gigi hopped aboard the Astro Mothership, where the graphic team loves her illustrations, designs, fresh takes on storyboards. Gigi has lived in both Northern and Southern California and says she likes it better up here. Take that SoCal!!! When Gigi isn’t designing, she’s either skating around her Sunset neighborhood or the Piers of SF.

Sushant Vohra
Designer

Sushant Vohra is a recent Industrial Design graduate from India. Sushant is first, and foremost a problem solver. His fresh, bright insight is always welcomed in our huddles. He is also a lover of obscure music, and spends his time studying the fine details of life…and picking up new CAD skills.

Jim Goodell
COO & Partner

With over twenty years of executive branding and design agency experience, Jim keeps a full-nelson on all things strategic at Astro. Hailing from the East Coast, Jim graduated from Purchase College, School of Art and Design. After receiving his MFA in Design and Photography from the University of Illinois, Jim landed in San Francisco, where he served for 15 years as the Managing Partner of Primo Angeli Inc. He soon stepped up to CEO of Primo Angeli: Fitch, where he was responsible throughout their global network for Packaging and Brand Communications. Away from the studio, you may find him searching for the perfect jetstream for his kites, or perfecting his photography. But don’t let the kite flying fool you, he can still flatten most wrestlers, even when he is wrestling above his weight class: welterweight.

Astronaut
Mascot

We found Astro on ebay, where he had penned a beautiful pitch requesting aid in his escape from a dank closet in the middle of Wisconsin. He had been hanging in the darkness for over five years and that got depressing for this astral traveler. After making his way via FedEx to the west coast, Astro instantly warmed up. He now floats above the lobby at Astro Studios, where he greets tourists and aliens alike.
